A Welcome From The Author

Welcome to the Graveyard Shift, a series of chat stories for those who like their fiction edged with a twist.  Included within these unique tales can be found a good measure of horror, a reasonable helping of sci-fi and a pinch of the supernatural, all told through the text messages of the unfortunate souls who have had a part to play in their unfolding. If you must read on, do so with care.

What can be found here is a portfolio of free chat fiction stories unencumbered by ads, programmed delays, disabled features or paid subscriptions, provided in a format easily accessible to anyone using a PC or mobile device. You need no proprietary app or software to enjoy these stories. All the unique and unusual tales presented here are written by the author, Wayne Densley, and all rights are reserved by him. Please note that all the names, places and situations mentioned here are completely fictional and any resemblance to the real world is wholly coincidental.

Blue

Nothing expresses a person's sense of independence more than the moment they take the keys to their first apartment. For Steve Hallows it was the culmination of three years of hard work, and as he stood in the third floor entranceway to his new home he had to admit he was rather pleased with himself. Ahead he could see only good times and freedom. Then he turned his phone on...

Monday 23rd

Biz 4.31pm
Got the keys yet?

Steve
Yeah. Picked them up this morning.

Biz
Great. When's the party?

Steve
Not for a few days.

Biz
What! Why so long?

Steve
Biz, I just spent three very long years trying to get away from you and Randle. Give me a few days to settle in.

Biz
Seems a rather snobbish attitude towards former roommates. Aren't the plebs good enough now?

Steve
:) Knocked it on the head. Don't want you soiling the furniture.

Biz
Hmm. I fear I must accept such insults graciously. Two days max then I'm sending in the boys.

Steve
I'm sure I will let you in eventually.

Biz
Need any help moving?

Last Bus

Consider if you will the tale of Burkhart Ransem, a man with a wide circle of friends and a career that has him fast-tracked to wealth and success. Consider also the more modest aspirations of his best friend Jackson. In need of a job Burkhart has found an opportunity for his friend, a contract that will see Jackson set also upon a path to comfort and success. All that need happen is Jackson make the appointment and do his thing. That is the plan but nothing is ever exactly as it seems...

Burkhart 2.45am
Hey Jackson. When are you getting in?

Jackson
Bit slow. ETA around 7.

Burkhart
Enjoying the bus?

Jackson
Not really. Should've taken the red-eye yesterday.

Burkhart.
At least you get to enjoy the scenery. Yeh?

Jackson
Up yours. I've been on this death-trap for sixteen hours. Better be worth it.

Burkhart
Don't worry. Major cred if you get the contract. You'll owe me plenty.

Jackson
Yeh. Sure.

Burkhart
Try and get some sleep. Big day tomorrow.

Burkhart 3.00am
You awake?

Jackson
What is it?

Hammer Down

For Maximilian Johns the night would begin like any other. Concerns about school dogged his thoughts, an upcoming project on the War of Independence only reminding him of how much he disliked History. Rather than worry too much about it however, he consoled himself with the possibility that he might be able to palm most of the work onto his friend, Benjamin. Such were his concerns, his world a small circle of friends and the never ending cycle of school life. What he could not foresee was how dangerous his world was about to become...

Max 2.07am
Benj. You up?

Max
Benj. Answer Goddamit.

Benjamin
WTH. Its 2 in the morning.

Max
Did you hear it?

Benjamin
I was asleep Max. What you talking about?

Max
The bang. Sounded like an explosion.

Benjamin
Where?

Max
South. Beyond the tracks I think.

Benjamin
U Sure? Could have been a car or something outside.

Max
No. This was big. Everything in my room shook.

Benjamin
Go back to sleep. I can't hear nothing.

Max 2.18am
Benj!

Benjamin
Geez, WTF.

Max
Can't you…

See Me Now

Consider if you will the tale of Ignatius Temple, known within his small circle of friends as Iggy and generally considered an inconsiderate and unkind being. Disposed towards cruel pranks Iggy was a man pursuing a life centred wholly about himself, one devoid of empathy or care for others. That was the sum of his existence until a shadow from his past closed upon him and gave him good reason to question what kind of man he really was.

Domino 8.41am
Iggy. You still on the train?

Iggy
As usual. Why do you think I'd be anywhere else?

Domino
Do you still get off at Central?

Iggy
Yeah. Why?

Domino
Need a favour.

Iggy
Again?

Domino
Just a short detour before you get to the office.

Iggy
I really don't have time.

Domino
Come on dude. I just need you to pick something up for me.

Iggy
What is it this time?

Domino
Its a present for Frida. Had it made special.

Iggy
Where?

Domino
New shop on Jackson Street. Makes bespoke jewelry. Got a great deal.

Iggy
And you want me to carry it around all day?

Domino
No. Just pick i…

Car Pool

Commuting to work is a chore endured by many as a part of their working day. Time consuming and sometimes expensive many of us choose to do it with work colleagues or friends. If we are lucky that long drive into work is one spent enjoying the company of others but sometimes it is not.  For your consideration is presented the case of Yu Han, a man who is about to have a very unusual day.

Biz 7.13am
Hey Yu.

Biz
Still on the freeway?

Yu
Yeah. Traffic is heavy.

Biz
You alone or did you catch the car pool?

Yu
Car pool today. Full house too.

Biz
Yeah? Who's with you.

Yu
Andrew's driving. Hedra's up front.

Biz
You catch a rear seat.

Yu
Yeah. Sharing with John.

Biz
Lucky Yu.

Yu
Funny. Why are you texting? Its not just to check our seating arrangements is it?

Biz
Nothing so important. Chairman's coming in today. In the late PM I think. Just got the head's up from Sandra.

Yu
Today? I thought he wasn't coming our way until Friday at the earliest?

Biz
Changed itinerary. Wants to see the new Eldright…

Red Eye

Long-haul air travel is a regular part of our modern lives, a necessity for many, a luxury for some and an endurance test for all who choose to take a seat.  Modern air travel is safe and efficient but what happens when the unexpected comes knocking at 30,000 feet? Here for your consideration is the story of Jackson Yemma, a man caught up in events outside of his control.

Gabriella 2.35am
You in the air yet?

Jackson
Just got through check-in. Takes forever these days.

Gabriella
Security bad?

Jackson
Almost an hour and a half. Weird though.

Gabriella
Why's that?

Jackson
Double checking everyone's ID and taking their temperatures.

Gabriella
That is weird. Someone ill?

Jackson
Don't think so. Everyone got on OK.

Gabriella
What's your ETA?

Jackson
Sydney to Rome. Looking at 22 hours not including stopover in Singapore.

Gabriella
Hell. That is a long haul.

Jackson
Yeah. Can't pass quick enough. You got everything ready?

Gabriella
Oh yeah. Tickets and transport to Venice. Should be a great trip.

Crooked Man

A promotion can be a defining moment in the career of any young professional. For Ally Jansen her dream job has become a reality and is a time to celebrate with friends, reflect on the hard work that has got her there, and look forward to the possibilities her new position will bring. Here for your consideration is a tale of friendship and danger, and of the benefits that come from keeping in touch with Grandma.

TUESDAY

Denny 3.26pm
Just heard the good news. Well done Ally!

Ally
Thanks Denny. It's taken a while.

Denny
You told Vic?

Ally
Not yet.

Denny
You should. Working for City Hall is a big deal. Which job did they give you?

Ally
I was up for two. Got the demographics post.

Denny
Its a good fit for you. Celebrating?

Ally
Hell yeah. My place tonight. Bring nothing.

Denny
Well you can afford it now. When do you start?

Ally
Week from Wednesday.

Denny
See if you can get a hold of Vic. He'll want to know.

Ally

Denny
See you tonight.
